Deprival Super Reaction Tendency – Mental Models

01/09/2021 by admin

Cricket is a mind game. Technique, skills, temperament, and fitness played a big role in the game. However, one should be mentally strong enough to survive the battle. Decision-making skill is a crucial aspect of the game. The skipper takes numerous decisions based on the context of the game. It’s not only the captain but all the players need to take some or other decisions depending on the situation. Now, how to take unbiased decisions? How one should not get impacted by the external factors while taking the decision.  Well, it’s not always easy to think logically. No matter how hard we try but still get biased and impacted by our surroundings.  Let’s discuss how to overcome the biases, minimize the prejudices, and make impactful decisions on and off the ground.

What is Mental Model?

Like craftsman tools, mental models are the tools for the mind. In a nutshell, it’s the ideas from the multiple disciplines which help to overcome the biases and improve the decision-making skill. We will be discussing multiple models in our upcoming posts and see how one can get benefited from them. Today we will discuss a model from the discipline of human psychology, and it’s called Deprival Super Reaction Tendency (DSRT).

Deprival Super Reaction Tendency:

The irrational response of human behavior due to anger, ego, depression, or depriving events is called DSRT.

Sledging or Banter is the common technique to get under a batsman’s skin. The intention is to make the batsman angry and force him to play the rash shot. Here DSRT plays a big role in batsman’s mind.

Sunil Gavaskar asked his batting partner Chetan Chauhan to walk out from the field after being given out wrongly at MCG in 1981. Well, DSRT took over isn’t it?

DSRT can be used in advantages as well. During the 1998 Coca-Cola Cup at Sharjah, Sachin Tendulkar charged down the pitch and hit a six to Michael Kasprowicz over deep mid-wicket. Kasprowicz didn’t like it at all. Sachin knew Kasprowicz was angry and he would bowl a short pitch delivery next. Typical fast bowler ego. Sachin was ready for it and hit six again on Kasprowicz’s next ball. Sachin was smart enough to use the bowler’s DSRT in his favor.

Not only in cricket ground but in our day to day life also DSRT plays a big role. Taking away People’s freedom, rights, value, love, friendship, opportunity, or territory will result in DSRT.
