Toss to choose Duke or the Reader ball in the Ashes

12/11/2021 by admin

A double toss in the Ashes might sound absurd, however, it happened during the third Ashes Test at Trent Bridge in 1993. England and Australia had the choice to pick from Duke or the Reader ball. An additional toss was conducted to decide the fate of the ball. Reader ball was used in the first two Test matches in the ashes due to a month-old ban on Duke.

Recently, Allan Border and Shane Warne recalled the incident during the first Ashes Test commentary at Brisbane. Border said it’s a weird circumstance, but he decided to pick the opposite ball of Graham Gooch’s choice to win the mind game. He can’t recall exactly which ball was rolled in, but he was pretty sure it was Duke.

Later, during the England and Pakistan Test series in 1996, the choice was given to pick the Duke or Reader ball.
